Super Mario Odyssey 2 in 2023?

A Liddle

The Nintendo Switch is home to a plethora of quality titles, and each year brings with it even more. Next year will be no exception to this; Fire Emblem Engage, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Pikmin 4, just to name a few. The game I’m most excited about however is one that hasn’t even been announced yet, but one I am confident is coming… Super Mario Odyssey 2!

Now let’s start with the obvious, a successor to Super Mario Odyssey is obviously happening and soon. The Super Mario series, especially the 3D Mario games, are basically Nintendo’s flagship series. Going into 2023, it will have been 6 years since their last original 3D Mario game (I’m excluding Bowser’s Fury as this is obviously not a full game by itself) this is the longest they have ever gone between 3D Mario games. They have something cooking, and it’s about to come out of the oven.

Why Odyssey 2 though? The game could be something completely new like Super Mario Island or Super Mario Tax Evasion. Well, there seems to be a pattern when it comes to 3D Mario games. Super Mario Galaxy was followed by Super Mario Galaxy 2. Super Mario 3D Land was followed by Super Mario 3D World. These game developers love to squeeze every last ounce of potential from their creative ideas and fun gameplay mechanics, and often it’s not possible to do this in just one entry. I feel this is especially true when it comes to Super Mario Odyssey.

Also, isn’t it strange how Super Mario Odyssey, one of Nintendo’s most successful games, never received paid DLC? Simply add a Kingdom or 2 to the game, it made perfect sense… but it never happened! Well, it is my theory that paid DLC was planned for Super Mario Odyssey, but history simply repeated itself. It seems to me that the concepts and ideas for DLC became so much that it started to make more sense to implement them into a sequel instead, in the same way Super Mario Galaxy 2 was originally planned as a smaller title called Super Mario Galaxy More.

Finally, every major Switch exclusive released in 2017 (the Switch’s launch year) has received a direct follow up at this point. Breath of the Wild now has Tears of the Kingdom, Splatoon 2 and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 were followed up by Splatoon 3 and Xenoblade Chronicles 3 respectively. Even Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle will soon have Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope. I highly doubt Super Mario Odyssey will be the only game exempt from this follow up phenomenon.

In Conclusion, Super Mario Odyssey 2 is almost definitely coming next year and I would not be surprised if Nintendo used it as their holiday title, just as they used Odyssey for their holiday title 6 years prior.

So, do you think I’m right, are we getting Super Mario Odyssey 2 next year? If so, what would you like to see added to the game?

… also Arms 2 is probably coming out as well. Don’t worry Arms, I didn’t forget about you… everyone else did though, sorry about that.
