I mean… we really should have seen this coming ever since Nintendo ran out of Wii U games to port!

So one of the more surprising announcements from the latest Nintendo Direct was Kirby’s Return to Dream Land Deluxe, a Kirby game from the Wii, given the deluxe remaster treatment. Now first things first, this game was incredible on the Wii and will also be incredible on the Switch. Also, if you think we’re getting too many Kirby games on the Switch… what is wrong with you? Leave Kirby alone, he’s adorable and he will eat you.

Whilst I am clearly excited for this game to release in February, I am also excited at the prospect of Nintendo remastering even more of their Wii offerings. Now, let me state the obvious, I am aware that this game may just be an anomaly and does not mean we’ll be getting more Wii remasters like this. After all, it’s not like we’ve had any other Wii games remastered for the Switch, right?

That’s right, as of February next year, 2 of the Wii’s best games will have been given the remaster treatment and made available on the Switch. Coincidentally, both of these titles have also coincided with the anniversaries of their respective series. In that same vein, Super Mario Galaxy also released for the Switch a la Super Mario 3D All Stars. Sadly, this game was a limited release and has now been discontinued.

So the question remains, is this all we’re getting or is there more to come from the Nintendo Wii era? Honestly, I would be surprised if Nintendo didn’t capitalise on this… well not that surprised, they don’t exactly have the best track record for managing their legacy content well.

Still, it makes sense for them to do this. Most of Nintendo’s first party offerings on the Wii are still incredibly beautiful and fun games, simply held back by the limitations of the console they were on. Polish those games up, replace the motion controls with more traditional play stiles, add some quality of life improvements and BOOM! Nintendo would totally get away with selling them as full priced games. Only time will tell but in my opinion, the future of Nintendo Wii games is looking good!
